Albert Nobbs (Close) is a middle-aged butler working in a starchy Dublin hotel in the late 19th century. McTeer's performance is one of the most convincing of its kind I've ever seen. I know a novel that begins: "This is the saddest story I have ever heard."

She draws courage from Hubert Page (Janet McTeer, also Oscar-nominated and deservedly so), the hotel’s painter and decorator and, implausibly, another career transvestite. But whether or not you think the role is calculated to be awards bait, Close is a skilled actress. What surrounds Close’s superbly calibrated performance is no less engrossing: the internal politics of Morrison’s, the fancy Dublin hotel presided over by Mrs Baker (Pauline Collins), a flouncy horror-show who is oily to her guests and vinegary to her employees (with the inimitable Brendan Gleeson in tow as Mr Halloran, a louche but kindly doctor). Don't have an account? The main character is brave in some ways; she has chosen a dangerous path to survive.

It becomes clear, if it wasn't already, that Albert has only a sketchy idea of what men and women do with each other, what sex is, what marriage is.

Also partial male nudity, kissing, and innuendo.

Glenn Close's new film Albert Nobbs is a cataclysmically sexless film, writes Robbie Collin. "F--k" is used once, and its Irish equivalent, "fecking," is heard at least twice. Nobbs’s chance encounter with a raffishly confident painter-decorator called Hubert Page (a magnificent Janet McTeer) suggests that another, happier kind of life might be open to him. With its bisexual hotel guests and cross-dressing costume parties, Albert Nobbs is constantly reaching for something — heck, anything — to say about sexual identity, but neither Close nor her director, Rodrigo García, seem to know quite what it should be.
