The Hungarian director Istvan Szabo was attached to the project circa 2001, but now the film has been made with Rodrigo Garcia, whose sure touch with women characters can be seen in his "Nine Lives" and "Mother and Child.".
That said, the movie uses some tired plot devices to give Albert something to do, and it relies on its characters being terribly naïve while the audience is two jumps ahead of them. At its core, Albert Nobbs is a portrait of a man paralyzed by solitude in this often powerful, aching portrait of the larger human condition of loneliness. Close's performance is quite touching, as is McTeer's. For Albert, it involves a business partnership, not a romance.

Albert Nobbs (Close) is a middle-aged butler working in a starchy Dublin hotel in the late 19th century. McTeer's performance is one of the most convincing of its kind I've ever seen. I know a novel that begins: "This is the saddest story I have ever heard."
She draws courage from Hubert Page (Janet McTeer, also Oscar-nominated and deservedly so), the hotel’s painter and decorator and, implausibly, another career transvestite. But whether or not you think the role is calculated to be awards bait, Close is a skilled actress. What surrounds Close’s superbly calibrated performance is no less engrossing: the internal politics of Morrison’s, the fancy Dublin hotel presided over by Mrs Baker (Pauline Collins), a flouncy horror-show who is oily to her guests and vinegary to her employees (with the inimitable Brendan Gleeson in tow as Mr Halloran, a louche but kindly doctor). It becomes clear, if it wasn't already, that Albert has only a sketchy idea of what men and women do with each other, what sex is, what marriage is.
