It’s fantastic to see a Robin Hood movie in his later years and with what a cast. More than fields I've planted with my hands. It's not so much that I never thought Robin Hood and Maid Marian would grow older. Very rarely have two huge stars (Hepburn & Connery) lost themselves so completely in roles of equally large renown (Maid Marian & Robin Hood). In this version of the ending of the 1973 Disney film Robin Hood, Robin is wounded by one of the arrows shot at him as he is escaping the burning castle, caused by the Sheriff of Nottingham.
It's like the OJ Simpson car chase of action scenes. Many are wounded or killed. Twenty years after going off to France to fight for King Richard the Lionhearted (Richard Harris) during the Crusades, Robin Hood (Sean Connery) and Little John (Nicol Williamson) return to Sherwood Forest in England where they meet up once again with their former friends, Friar Tuck (Ronnie Barker) and Will Scarlett (Denholm Elliott). A British mercenary arrives in pre-Revolution Cuba to help train General Batista's Army against Castro's guerrillas while he also romances a former lover now married to an unscrupulous plantation owner.
While Robin hopes to rekindle his relationship with Maid Marian and live out the rest of his life peacefully his old opponents are going to make carrying out this plan difficult. I've tried to find him on my terms, and God knows I've tried. Marian was the perfect role for the 46 year old Hepburn to portray, and no doubt it was the quality of the script and the fascinating premise of the story which were able to lure her back to the silver screen after a nine-year absence. The Wrap While John keeps watch outside the door, Marian prepares a potion to ease Robin's pain. This unusual take on the legend of Robin Hood is an elegiac and downbeat depiction of the forest-dwelling outlaw (played by Sean Connery) as an older man who has returned, disillusioned, from The Crusades. I love you more than children. The music of John Barry, as is always the case, wonderfully accompanies every mood and moment of the story. What a cast this is, Richard Harris is one helluva King Richard.
