Old Monarch Pass is only a mile west of Monarch Pass. There are multiple switchbacks. Old Monarch Pass connects U.S. 50 on both sides of the Continental Divide. Poncha Springs, 18.5 miles to the east Ride north on paved CR 888 to CR 237--mile 5.8 My picture was fuzzy but it was so fun to watch the kids across the pond. The mountains and river look so refreshing! As we hiked a short section of the Colorado Trail, we passed a few thru hikers. At this point the road becomes gravel ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. The kids could have their freedom with their friends but not remain hidden for long. The 567 miles of the CT trail between Denver and Durango passes through some spectacular scenery in the Colorado Rockies.
If my 4 month old kitten can hike this trail, so can you! Old Monarch Pass road can be accessed from HWY 50 on the east side of the summit of Monarch Pass or from the White Pine Road (CR 888), on the west side.
The trail starts just west of the Monarch Pass gift/food shop on the other side of Hwy 50.
Best completed on Mountain Bike as the road has some rough sections. Part of the Old Monarch Pass Loop is also a section of the Colorado Trail. Took the whole family.
Beautiful view of the mountains at 11,300 feet elevation! We have been fortunate to hike several sections of the CT during our stay, each equally stunning. Directions to trailhead: Park at Monarch Pass Gift Shop lot, cross highway 50 and walk near the yellow signs. Check with a local ranger station for current conditions. Pretty easy trail. A short trail connects the Old Monarch Pass Road with the unimproved old toll road to the old old pass. Loved it! This stretch of road should not be attempted by novice drivers. You can capture two passes on this loop and there are several combinations available with Monarch Pass. It brought back memories of the freedom of having a bike and growing up a small town. Old Monarch Pass Road winds along an easy-to-follow path through towering stands of lodgepole pines and spruce-fir forest. Views all along were spectacular! Trails probably rated about a 2 /3. You can fly down certain sections and imagine yourself on the Pro MTB circuit. A morning walk along the Arkansas River often ends with our feet in the cool water while watching the rafters, kayakers and skim boarders floating by. Some good views, but you are right by the hwy for a lot of this hike and hear semi's and cars a lot of the time.
