Irvin David Yalom, M.D., is an author of fiction and nonfiction, Emeritus Professor of Psychiatry at Stanford University, an existentialist, and accomplished psychotherapist. Acclaimed author and renowned psychiatrist Irvin D. Yalom distills thirty-five years of psychotherapy wisdom into one brilliant volume. Although he has an ardent understanding of therapeutic techniques, he relishes being grounded in an Existential approach to individual therapy. As Dr. Yalom explains, from the existential perspective, there are four ultimate concerns that a patient confronts with the givens of existence; viz., meaning in life, freedom, isolation, and death. The culmination of master psychiatrist Dr Irvin Yalom's forty-five years' work as a therapist, this book illustrates through real case studies how patients and therapists alike can get the most out of therapy. Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 30, 2014. It is for these therapists and these patients that I write The Gift of Therapy. At his age he deserves to give something more than he has to the profession that is so much a part of one's identity. Working with Indigenous partners at our trainings and then making a donation to a First Nations, Cree, or Metis cause is an important part of GIFT’s Forest Therapy Training Program. On that note, his clients are characters but they are also normal enough to normalize what receiving therapy may be like---so if you are considering it for yourself this is a good way to test the waters of your pre-contemplation. Something went wrong. From home visits to dream work, it's not my jam right now, at least in the field in which I'm working. Anyone interested in psychotherapy or personal growth will rejoice at the publication of The Gift of Therapy, a masterwork from one of today's most accomplished psychological thinkers. A book aimed at enriching the therapeutic process for a new generation of patients and counselors, Yalom’s Gift of Therapy is an entertaining, informative, and insightful read for anyone with an interest in the subject. Note that it is not necessarily the client who is the anxious party!!
